The book I' d most like to reread, if I could find it again
I reread Herman Hesse' s Steppenwoolf every two years, yet Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevski, The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing, and the poetry of Attila Ilhan, Nazim Hikmet and Metin Altiok are always to hand to reread, especially when I need strength to keep writing.

Promise at Dawn by Romain Gary.

My favourite bookshop
My favourite bookshops must include coffee-shop inside; then I can smell 2 of my favourites together: coffee and books. Barnes and Nobles in New York City, FNACs in Paris and Barcelona, Remzi Bookstores in Istanbul, Foyles and Borders in London.

Author I' d like to nominate for the Nobel Prize for literature
Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet and novelist Orhan Pamuk, and Margaret Atwood.

Deceased author I' d like to meet for a drink
French author Romain Gary (who used the pseudonym Emile Ajar in his last novels). I might even flirt with him, since I admired both his literature and himself, and dedicated one of my novels to him.


Buket Uzuner is an author of short fiction, travelogues and novels who has been described as the next Orhan Pamuk. Her books have appeared on Turkish bestseller lists, and have been translated into five languages. In 1993 she won the Yunus Nadi Prize for her novel The Sound of Fishsteps, and in 1998 the University of Istanbul best novel award for 'Mediterranean Waltz'. Uzuner, born in 1955, has been named one of Turkey' s 75 most influential women by Sabah magazine and is an honorary fellow of the University of Iowa. Her novels, A Cup of Turkish Coffee, The Sound of Fishsteps, Mediterranean Waltz and Gallipoli-Long White Cloud are published in English by Everest.
